how do you turn them on?

You first twist counter clockwise to open and remove the white plastic covering. Close the light by turning clockwise and the lights will turn on.

Do these get hot? I'd like to use them behind some paper decorations and want to be sure the paper won't be in danger of catching fire.

These lights do not get hot. If left on for long periods of time then the battery will simply run out.

I ordered these lights to use for centerpieces for my wedding. I am setting everything up the day before because it is at a park district hall. What is the life of the batteries? If I set them up around the day before (let's say around noon), will they still be lit throughout the whole reception the next day (so, around 36 hours?)

Don't know. We wondered the same thing. Doesn't give hour life anywhere. We had to put it together early am to be safe. Turned on 8am still bright at midnight when the party was over. Maybe just call the seller.
